Betrothed Forever
“And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies.”
You know the difference between somebody saying they love you and somebody signing something. One can be withdrawn over coffee. The other has a date on it, and witnesses.
Hosea heard these words about a wife who had already gone to other men. That is not a metaphor introduced for effect; it is the whole architecture of the book, and God had told him to marry her knowing it. So when the terms of the betrothal arrive, read what is in them. In righteousness. In judgment. In lovingkindness. In mercies. In faithfulness. Five terms, and the second one is the one nobody quotes. Judgment is in the middle of a marriage vow. God is not proposing an arrangement in which the betrayal is treated as though it never happened; He is putting the reality of it inside the terms and binding Himself anyway. That is a different thing from being overlooked, and it is sturdier, because nothing later can be produced as evidence that He did not know.
And the verb is repeated three times. I will betroth, I will betroth, I will betroth. In that culture betrothal was legally binding before there was a household or a wedding. It was the point past which withdrawal required a divorce.
Whose loyalty are you dividing right now? You know which screen, which person, which habit. There is no need to explain it here.
Say it to Him once, in whatever words are actually true, and then stop. Do not follow it with a plan. Do not talk yourself into feeling better about it. Sit there for two or three minutes and say nothing further.
