Prepared for You
“Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:”
Matthew 25 was spoken on the Mount of Olives, three days before the crucifixion, in the last block of teaching Jesus gave before he was arrested.
That is worth knowing, because it means this is not a general homily about kindness. It is the closing statement. He has just told two parables about waiting, ten virgins and a man handing out talents, and then he drops the parables entirely and describes the thing itself: all nations gathered, a King on a throne, a division. The last words of a man's public teaching tend to be the ones he most wants remembered, and these are Christ's.
And the sentence itself has two halves that people find hard to hold together. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Prepared, before anything existed, before any of them had done anything. That is inheritance language, which is the opposite of wages; nobody earns a place that was made ready before they were. Yet the King's stated evidence is entirely practical: I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat, a stranger, and ye took me in, sick, and ye visited me. And the blessed are baffled by it. Lord, when saw we thee? They were not building a case. They did not know they were doing it to Him.
The truth to hold is both halves at once, which is uncomfortable and correct. Your place is not payment for the meals, or the arithmetic would have been visible to you and it was not visible to them. And the King identifies His own by the meals anyway. Grace is the ground; the plate handed over is how it shows.
So the chair at the end of the table, the one nobody claims, is not for guests unsure of the invitation. It was prepared. And there is somebody hungry within a mile of you who does not know that yet.
