Lamp and Light
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119 says, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
Maybe you wanted a map: the five-year view, and the answer about the job, the move and the person. What keeps arriving instead is enough light for tomorrow morning, and that can feel like being brushed off.
Look closely at what the psalm describes, because it is a particular object. It is a small clay oil lamp, the kind people carried at night, which threw a small circle of light around the feet. It was carried low, to show where to put your next step on a road full of holes. And it only helps while you move. A lamp at your feet gives light as you walk. If you stand still, it lights up the same patch of ground forever. That is what waiting for certainty looks like from the outside.
The next verse is the part people leave off, and everything turns on it: "I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments." The lamp shows the step, and the promise he made is what makes him take it. The verse after that says, "I am afflicted very much." This man is in trouble, walking at night, and he has decided to keep moving.
So God is giving you exactly the kind of light that shows the ground you are actually coming to. The road ahead is not dark. It is just not close enough yet to be lit, and when you get there, His word will light that stretch too.
