Lamp and Light

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

You wanted the map. The five year view, the answer about the job and the move and the person, and what keeps arriving is enough light for tomorrow morning, which feels like being fobbed off.

But look at what is being described, because it is a specific object. Not a beacon on a hill, not a torch held high. A small clay lamp, the kind that burned a spoonful of oil and threw a circle of light about a stride wide, carried low, at the feet. It was built to show the next place to put your foot on a road with holes in it. And it moves. A lamp at the feet illuminates by travelling; stand still and you light up the same patch of ground indefinitely, which is what waiting for certainty actually looks like from outside.

The next line in the stanza is the part people leave off, and it is the hinge. I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments. The lamp shows a step; the swearing is what makes him take it. And a few lines later, from the same stanza, comes I am afflicted very much. This is not a comfortable man describing a pleasant devotional habit. It is somebody in trouble, walking at night, deciding to move.

So the light is not being rationed. It is the kind of light that only reveals ground you are actually approaching, which means the next stretch of road is not dark. It is simply not yet close enough to be lit.
