His People, His Sheep
“Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”
A sheep in a field does not spend the afternoon proving that it is allowed to be there.
Yet much of what wears people out is the work of proving they belong. A new job, a new city or a new group of friends can feel like an audition that never ends. You talk too much in the meeting. You keep score at the family table. You replay the one thing you said, all the way home.
The psalm goes beneath all that with a claim about who owns us: "it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves." There is a well-known detail in the Hebrew here, and it is worth knowing. The way the text is written and the traditional way of reading it aloud differ by one letter, and the two words sound exactly alike. One gives the KJV's "not we ourselves." The other gives "and we are His," which is how many newer versions translate it. The psalm is at home with either reading, because they say the same thing from two sides: you did not make yourself, and you belong to Him.
Then comes the other half of the picture: "we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture." Sheep are not let into the pasture because they earned it, and they cannot resign from the flock. They eat where the shepherd leads them. Their place was settled before they knew there was a question. That is the whole argument of the verse. The heading is worth noticing too. In Hebrew this is the only psalm titled a psalm of thanksgiving, using the word for the thank offering. Someone brought it to the temple as a gift of thanks, and not as a plea.
The same is true of your place with God. It is a promise from Him, and you do not have to work up a feeling about it on your way into the room. You did not make yourself, and you already belong to the Lord, your Shepherd. Nobody in the room you are about to walk into has the power to give you that or to take it away.
