His People, His Sheep
“Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”
A sheep in a field does not spend the afternoon establishing that it is allowed to be in the field.
Most of what tires a person out is the work of proving they belong. New job, new city, new circle, and the audition never quite closes; you talk too much in the meeting, you keep score at the family table, you replay the one thing you said on the drive home.
The psalm goes underneath that with a claim about ownership. It is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves. There is a well-known wrinkle in the Hebrew here that is worth knowing rather than hiding: the written text and the traditional reading differ by one letter, and the other ancient reading gives and we are his. The two are as close as a hair, and the psalm is fine with either, because they say the same thing from two sides. You did not make yourself. You are his.
And the flock, which is the other half of the picture. Sheep are not admitted on merit and cannot resign. They eat where the shepherd walked them, and their standing in the pasture was settled before they were aware there was a question. That is the whole argument of the verse, and the psalm's title is worth noticing too: it is the only psalm headed a psalm of praise, using the word for the thank offering. Someone brought this to the temple as a gift, not as a plea.
So the standing was settled before you were aware there was a question, and that is a promise rather than a mood you have to work up on the way into the room. You did not make yourself. You belong to somebody already, and nobody in the room you are about to walk into has the authority to grant that or to withdraw it.
