Water for the Thirsty

I know what your objection is, because you have made it to me twice now: that dry is not the same as doubting, and that people keep answering the wrong question. You still read. You still show up. Nothing lands. You said it was like talking in a room after the furniture has been carried out, and I have not been able to improve on that sentence.

So I want to point at one thing in Isaiah and then leave you alone about it. Look at who the water is promised to. Not the recovered, not the fervent, not the ones who have got their morning routine working again. I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground. Thirst is the qualification. Cracked ground is the qualification. In the picture, dryness is not what disqualifies you from the water; it is the thing that makes the water go where it goes.

And then watch how the second half of the verse reinterprets the first, because Isaiah does this deliberately. I will pour my spirit upon thy seed. The water was never about your mood. It is his Spirit, and the promise runs straight past you to the people coming after you, which is worth knowing on the days you cannot raise much interest in your own case. Two verses on he says one shall say, I am the LORD's, meaning a person not yet born, standing in ground you watered nothing in.

So tell him you are dry, in those words, before you do one religious thing about it. Then ask for the Spirit, and ask by name for the ones coming after you. Do that tomorrow, and the day after, and go on doing it in that order for as long as it takes.
