Double for Your Shame
“For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.”
The promise of "double" for your shame can sound too big to believe. If you have carried a shame that other people watched, you have every right to doubt it.
So follow the word through Scripture. In the law, "double" is what a thief had to pay back. Isaiah, though, puts it beside "portion" and "possess," and those are the words of inheritance. In Deuteronomy the firstborn son receives "a double portion of all that he hath," and it is his because of his place in the family. Isaiah has already used the word once, about Jerusalem: "she hath received of the LORD’s hand double for all her sins." Zechariah uses it for "prisoners of hope": "I will render double unto thee." And at the end of Job's story, "the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before," in the same life where he had lost everything.
That is the weight behind this verse, and it explains the odd detail in the middle of it: "in their land they shall possess the double." That land is the same ground where the shame happened. Most of us would ask for a fresh start somewhere nobody knows us. This promise means standing where it happened, as an heir rather than as a warning to others.
The verse does not promise that the memory will go quiet. It promises that you will not have the last word on what it cost you, and neither will the people who watched. The last word belongs to God, and the verse tells you what it is: "everlasting joy shall be unto them."
