Carried Like a Son
“The LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went.”
A father carries his sleeping child from the car to bed. The boy half wakes at the door, sees the hallway light, and falls asleep again. In the morning he will not remember being carried at all.
Most of us remember about that much of our hardest years. You are here, standing, reading this, and you could not honestly explain how you got through.
Moses is speaking to Israel at the border of the promised land, and he reminds them of what he told them the first time Israel stood at that border. He says it to correct them, and that is easy to miss. He points them back to the wilderness, "where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went." That means the whole way, and not only the hard parts. Then, in the next breath, he says, "Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God." They had the proof in their own legs, and still they would not trust Him with the next step. Being carried does not produce faith by itself. Remembering that you were carried is what builds it, and nobody remembers without making the effort.
May God give you back a clear memory of the road you did not walk in your own strength, the times and places where He carried you. And may that memory come back to you before you reach your next border.
