Enough
“The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.”
You may be counting what is gone. Most people who come to this verse are doing the same.
Jeremiah counted too, and then he counted something else. A portion is the share each person is given when a family's land is divided. The Hebrew word is the same one God used for the one tribe that got no land at all. He told Aaron, "I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel" (Numbers 18:20), and the whole tribe of Levi lived by that promise. So Jeremiah is not talking himself out of a loss. He is naming something he really owns. He sits in the ashes of a burned city and says, "The LORD is my portion." The lines just before it tell us what that portion holds: "his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness" (3:22-23).
Nothing on that list needs the city to be standing. God's compassions were new on the morning the walls came down, and they were new on the morning after. They have been new every morning since, in Babylon, in the ruins, and through all the years nobody wrote down.
