Daily Manna · Day 13 · January 13
Green Pastures
“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.”
Sheep standing in a field at midnight. All of them upright. None of them eating.
Shepherd, you do not suggest that we lie down. The verb says you make us, and I have read enough about sheep to know how. The empty stomach, so you find grass. The moving water, because a sheep will not drink from a stream that runs fast, so you lead it to water that is still. And the thing in the treeline, which is your business and never theirs.
I have been managing my own field. I have kept myself upright over an unfinished list, over a conversation I did not have, over the suspicion that if I ever stopped I would find out how tired I actually am. Make me lie down. I am asking to be overruled, which I do not enjoy asking, and I notice that nowhere in the psalm is the sheep consulted.
You take responsibility for the conditions of rest. Take them tonight. Amen.
Then, awake: choose the one task that will still be undone at bedtime, and decide now, while you are calm and not yet cornered, that it stays undone until morning.
Daily Manna runs on a two-year cycle. The year two reading for day 13 is A Solitary Place (Mark 1:35).
