Wounded for Us
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
Who pays for the damage?
Every society has answered that, and the answers are made of the same material. In Isaiah's world the answer was livestock: an unblemished lamb, hands laid on its head to make the transfer visible, in a courtyard that smelled of blood and smoke. In yours the answer is usually yourself. Overwork. Apology. A permanent low hum of debt with no creditor you could name if asked.
Set them side by side without collapsing the difference. Isaiah 53 is doing what the sacrificial system could not. The sufferer is not an animal, he is a person, and he is silent by choice. The chapter assigns each wound an owner and does not blur it. Wounded for our transgressions. Bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement, the punishment that purchases peace, laid on him. And then the reason, stated plainly in the next verse: All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
The ancient worshipper had to bring the animal to the courtyard himself. That is the difference the chapter is announcing, and it is a large one. Nobody carried this one in.
So the healing in the last clause is not a general improvement in your circumstances, and reading it that way will break your faith the first week it fails to deliver. It is the healing of the going astray. That is the wound the exchange was made for, and it has been made. There is nothing outstanding on that account for you to keep paying down by being good.
