Light and Understanding
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
The verse is not about study.
Read it again. The entrance of thy words giveth light. Not the mastery of them, not the analysis, not the accumulated years. The entrance. Light arrives when the words get in, and getting in is a different operation from reading about them. A man can spend a decade among commentaries with the door shut.
And it stops short of saying the light goes to the qualified. It says the simple. In the psalms and in Proverbs that word means the open, the untrained, the one who has not yet made up his mind. It is not a compliment paid to the intellect and it is not an insult either. It is a description of the only posture light can enter through. The next verse is the same picture in another register: I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments. Wide open, and desperate about it.
Which explains something uncomfortable. You can hold entirely correct opinions about Scripture and stay dark, because opinions are held at the door.
Today, close the tabs and the podcast queue, take one psalm, read it slowly enough for it to change your mind about something, and begin by telling God you do not understand it yet. Being the simple one in the room is the entry requirement, not the disgrace.
