“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

The letter this verse sits inside gives you one, and you will not like it. Build houses. Plant gardens. Marry off your children in Babylon. Seventy years, and then I will visit you (29:5-10). The thoughts of peace are real, and they do not shorten the exile by a day. So you were given dates after all. They are simply not the dates you asked for, and they run long enough that the only sane thing to do with them is plant something.
