Heart Surgery
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”
The objection comes first, and it deserves to. If God hands out new hearts, why am I still carrying this one? Months after the funeral nothing reaches you, not the things that ought to hurt and not the things that ought to feel good, and a promise about a heart of flesh reads like an advertisement for a product that never shipped.
Ezekiel is speaking to a nation in exile about a national restoration, and he is precise about the mechanism. God never instructs anyone to soften themselves, because nobody can reach the organ in question. He describes an extraction and a replacement, and then puts His own Spirit inside to make the change hold: I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes (36:27). He is equally precise about the motive, four verses earlier. I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake. Mercy, never merit.
Which leaves your question standing, and I am not going to close it for you. Is the numbness a heart still made of stone, or a heart of flesh that was badly hurt and has gone quiet the way living tissue does? Scripture hands you no test for telling those apart, and anyone offering you one is selling something.
Here is what holds either way. The surgery is God's to perform, and He has bound His own name to performing it. Your numbness is not the evidence, and neither is your enthusiasm. His name is.
