Heart Surgery
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”
The objection comes first, and it deserves to. If God gives out new hearts, why am I still carrying this one? Months after the funeral, nothing reaches you. The things that ought to hurt do not hurt, and the things that ought to feel good do not feel good. A promise about "an heart of flesh" reads like an advertisement for a product that never arrived.
Ezekiel is speaking to a nation in exile, about the whole nation being restored, and he is exact about how it works. God never tells anyone to soften their own heart, because nobody can reach inside and do that. He describes taking one heart out and putting a new one in. Then He puts His own Spirit inside to make the change last: "And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes" (36:27). Four verses earlier, He is just as exact about why He does it: "I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake." It is mercy, never merit.
That leaves your question standing, and I am not going to close it for you. Is the numbness a heart still made of stone? Or is it a heart of flesh that was badly hurt and has gone quiet, the way living tissue does? Scripture does not give you a test for telling those apart, and anyone who offers you one is selling something.
Here is what holds either way. The surgery is God's to perform, and He has tied His own name to doing it. Your numbness does not prove anything, and neither does your enthusiasm. His name is the proof.
