The Crowns
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
Twenty-four gold crowns hitting the floor in front of a throne, and the sound they make landing.
That is the picture John gives before he gives any words. The elders are seated, robed and crowned, and they get up, fall down, and cast their crowns before the throne. Whatever they were given to wear goes back where it came from. Then they sing.
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things. Worthy is the whole of the song. It makes no request and mentions no need. It states what God is owed and hands it over, and the reason offered is that he made everything there is. Bibles vary in the last clause, some printing for thy pleasure they are and were created and others by thy will, and what they all agree on is that nothing standing anywhere stands on its own account.
One chapter later the same word comes back with a second reason under it. Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood. Made, and then bought.
