Two Days or a Year
“And when the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, then after that the children of Israel journeyed: and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Israel pitched their tents.”
It is dawn over a camp of tents in a stony desert, and before anyone looks at anything else, they look up at the cloud over the tabernacle.
That cloud did two jobs, and the second one is easy to miss. Numbers says it covered the tabernacle by day and looked like fire by night. A psalm explains what that meant for the people under it: "He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night." In the desert the days are scorching and the nights are cold, so the cloud gave them shade in the heat and light in the dark. The same sign that told them where to go was also keeping them alive while they watched it.
Today's verse gives the rule they lived by: "And when the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, then after that the children of Israel journeyed: and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Israel pitched their tents."
Then the chapter repeats itself for six verses, and the repeating is how it makes its point. The cloud might stay "two days, or a month, or a year." It might lift "by day or by night." The camp never knew ahead of time how long a stop would last. Yet staying put and packing up are both called keeping "the charge of the LORD." Waiting was obedience just as much as walking was.
Centuries later, Isaiah took this picture and turned it into a promise for Jerusalem: "a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence." The Hebrew word for defence there means a canopy, a covering stretched over people. So if you are waiting, with no idea for how long, remember the cloud. The God who tells you when to move is also the God who covers you while you wait.
