A Stream That Holds
“But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.”
In Israel, most streams are dry for most of the year.
After heavy rain, water rushes down a dry riverbed, brown and loud. A week later the bed is only stones again. Job used that picture for friends who let him down: "My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook," and "What time they wax warm, they vanish."
"But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream." Judgment here means justice. The Hebrew behind "mighty stream" describes a stream that keeps on running, the kind that does not dry up in the hottest months of summer.
So God wants more than a sudden flood of good deeds, gone by next week. He is asking for a stream that lasts: the same fairness and honesty showing up in the same places when nobody is watching and no rain has fallen for weeks. Only He can keep a stream like that flowing in us.
