Every Weight
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,”
A runner at the start line, going through his pockets. Keys, coins, phone, all of it out, none of it wrong to own and none of it coming.
Two things are named as coming off, and only one is sin. Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us. Weight is bulk, the mass you are carrying, and the versions reach for it differently: every weight, every encumbrance, everything that hinders. A thing can be perfectly lawful and still be freight. As for the cloud of witnesses, they are chapter eleven, and the sentence just before yours says how their race ended. These all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise. They ran without seeing the end of it, and the pockets came out anyway.
