I Did Eat Them

"Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart." Found here means come across, and eating is what Ezekiel was told to do with a scroll: "eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel." Ezekiel adds, "Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness." Yet only two verses after his joy, Jeremiah is saying this to God: "Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar, and as waters that fail?" The joy and the complaint sit in the same man, on the same page.

May you have words from God that you found and did not make up. May you hunger for them even on the day they are the only sweet thing in the house. May your joy and your complaint both be brought to God and kept in the same book, the way Jeremiah's were kept. And may you hold on to what Jeremiah held on to in the same verse: "I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts." The God who told him, "I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee," is the God whose name you carry.
