When I Awake
“As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.”
Think of waking up in the morning, when the first thing to come clear is a face you love.
David has just been describing the men "which have their portion in this life." He is not sneering at them. God fills their bellies with His own "hid treasure." "They are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes." That is a real portion, honestly given, and most of us would gladly take it.
Then David says, "As for me." His hope has two halves: "I will behold thy face in righteousness," and "I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness."
His satisfaction comes after a waking, but he does not say waking from what. The psalm does not settle which morning he meant, and you will not settle it this afternoon either. Let the sentence stay as short as he wrote it. He will see God's face, and it will be enough. Carry that until evening.
