Learned Obedience
“Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;”
If he never once disobeyed, what was there left for him to learn?
Hebrews answers in the verse before. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared. That is Gethsemane in a line. What was new was obeying while that was happening.
The same letter says why: to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. And then what it is for. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. The learning was for the priesthood.
So the question turns round. There was nothing left for him to learn about right and wrong. What he had not yet done was obey from inside a body under load, in the dark, with tears, wanting out. He has done it now, and that is who is listening this morning.
