Remembering Twice
“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.”
I will remember the works of the LORD. Asaph had already tried remembering, earlier the same night, and it went badly: I remembered God, and was troubled.
The first attempt was aimed inward. I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search. What the search turned up was six questions and no answers. Hath God forgotten to be gracious?
The second attempt points somewhere else. What he recites is the sea: the waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid. He was not there. That rescue belonged to people centuries dead, and he lays it out in detail while his own trouble is still running.
Tonight, recite a deliverance that was never yours. Asaph's own history had nothing left in it that week, and the sea did.
