Daily Manna, Year Two · Day 152 · June 1
Walk in It
“And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.”
And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
The sentence runs in a circle and John knew it was doing that. Love is walking in the commandments, and the commandment is that you walk in love. Pull the two halves apart and you have the pair of failures the church keeps choosing between: obedience with nobody home in it, or warmth that is never required to do anything on a Tuesday. He says it plainly in his first letter as well. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.
This is a short note to one household, a woman and her children, from a man who says he would rather come and speak face to face than write it. Which half of the circle have you been living in this week?
Daily Manna runs on a two-year cycle. The year one reading for day 152 is Perfect Peace (Isaiah 26:3).
