Whatsoever He Saith
“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”
"Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it."
These are the last words the Bible records from Mary. John mentions her again, and she stands by the cross near the end of his Gospel, but he gives her nothing more to say. So her final sentence in Scripture is an instruction to the servants at a wedding.
John tells us he had far more to report than he could write down. For the first sign Jesus did, he chose a wedding at Cana, a village that no other Gospel mentions, on the day the wine ran out.
He also tells us who knew what happened: "When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;)." That aside is John's own; the brackets are how translators mark it. The man in charge of the feast had no idea where the wine came from, but the servants knew, because they had drawn the water themselves.
Look at where Mary's sentence sits. She says it just after her son has told her, "mine hour is not yet come." She also says it before there is anything to do, so she is committing the servants to an order that has not been given yet. When the order comes, it is plain hard work: "Fill the waterpots with water." There were six stone jars, each holding twenty gallons or more, and the servants filled them by hand, "up to the brim." Nothing about carrying water looks like a miracle while you are doing it.
John says why he kept this story: "This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him."
So think of the plainest thing the Lord has told you to do that you have not yet done. It may be a small, kind thing that costs an afternoon and that nobody will see. Do it now, before you have worked out what it will achieve. The servants who simply filled the jars were the ones who knew where the good wine came from, and Jesus still shows His glory through ordinary obedience like theirs.
