A Man Plans His Way
“A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”
Your calendar for next year is already filling up. A job change, a move, the trip you promised yourself. Planning feels like control, and losing it feels like failure.
Set that next to the world this proverb came out of, because the difference matters and so does the sameness. An Israelite farmer planned in a landscape where the whole year turned on whether the early rains came in October. He could not insure anything. He could not move. He planned anyway: when to sow, which field to leave fallow, which daughter to marry to which family. Planning was not a modern anxiety and Proverbs never treats it as one. A man's heart deviseth his way is a description, not a rebuke, and the same chapter says commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established, which assumes you had thoughts worth committing.
What the second half adds is jurisdiction. The LORD directeth his steps. Steps, not destination: the word is for the individual pace, the next one and the one after. He is not overruling your five-year plan in one grand act. He is quietly deciding Tuesday.
The farmer and the person with the phone differ in almost everything and agree in the one thing that hurts. Neither of them controls the rain.
Which leaves the honest question, which was never whether you should plan. Of the things on that calendar, how many are proposals, and how many have you already privately promised yourself God is not allowed to change?
