Come as You Are
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
We have got very good at being tired in a way that sleep does not touch. We wake up already behind. The first thought of the morning is a list, and we have started calling that normal for our age and our responsibilities.
Lord, we notice what you were doing just before you said this. You had finished denouncing three towns that watched you work and would not change, and then you thanked your Father that these things are hidden from the wise and prudent and revealed unto babes. You said it out of that, not out of a quiet afternoon. Then you turned and called the worn out, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and you did not ask any of them to tidy up first.
And we notice what you offered, because we have quoted the first half for years and skipped the rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me. Not an empty back. A different load, and a teacher attached to it, and a pace set by somebody meek and lowly in heart rather than by us. A yoke was made for two animals; the heavier one carried the weight and the lighter one learned the field.
We are carrying at least one thing we took on to prove something. You know which. We are also postponing at least one thing you actually handed us.
So here is the promise, and we will take it as it stands. I will give you rest. Not I will clear your calendar. Not I will explain why the year went this way. Rest unto your souls, given by the one carrying the other side of it, whose burden he calls light, and who has never once dropped his end. Amen.
