No Good Thing Lacking
“The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.”
We asked plainly. We waited. What arrived was not it, and the quiet since has been doing slow work on our trust, and most of us have not said so to anyone.
Set two pictures side by side. In the first, a man is hiding in a cave in the Judean hills, hunted by a king who wants him dead, having recently escaped a foreign court by pretending to be insane. That is the situation Psalm 34 comes out of, and the same psalm says, flatly, many are the afflictions of the righteous. In the second, somebody is sitting in a kitchen with a phone face down, working out how to explain to a friend why a prayer that mattered went unanswered.
The distance between those two is real. The man in the cave was in physical danger; most of us are not. But the psalm's argument works in both, and it is an argument, not a mood. He points at young lions, the most capable hunters in that landscape, animals that fear nothing and take what they want, and observes that they go hungry anyway. Capability is not a supply line. Then the contrast: they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
The word carrying the weight is good, and it is His word rather than ours. Some of what we ask for would cost us more than the asking does, and some of it we would not ask for twice if we could see the invoice.
So here is the promise as it stands, with nothing added. Not that you will get the thing. Not that the lions eat. That a person who is actually seeking God will never, at the end of the accounting, turn out to have been short of something good.
