Precious in His Sight
“Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee.”
What decides what something is worth? Today's verse from Isaiah gives God's answer, and He gives it to people in deep trouble.
Two verses earlier, Isaiah sets water and fire in front of the nation, and he does not pretend either one can be avoided: "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned." A river in flood does not care what you are carrying, and fire does not bargain. Notice that God's people go through the water and the fire, and not around them. Both stay as dangerous as they are. What God promises is His company in the middle of them.
Then God gives His reason, and it is about price: "I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee." The Hebrew word translated "precious" is the word used for costly stones, something rare. A precious stone does not decide its own worth. Its worth is set by the one who values it. A pebble and a sapphire are both just rock, and the difference between them is a judgment made from outside them.
That is why the sentence comes in this order: "Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee." God's seeing comes first, and the honour follows from it. Remember who heard this. It was spoken to a nation in exile and disgrace, living with the results of its own choices.
So think of the harshest thing you said to yourself this week. For a few minutes, stop saying it, and do not rush to swap in something kinder. Do not write, argue or explain. Sit still and let God be the One who sets your worth, because that is the only place your worth was ever set. The harsh thing you said about yourself is not what He sees when He looks at you.
