“Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.”
There is a version of you that only one other person has met.
It runs in the background while you make coffee: the commentary, the resentment you would never voice, the sentence you shoved away in the middle of the night. And the psalm walks straight through it as a list. Read the verbs in order, because the order is the argument. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising. Thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down. And art acquainted with all my ways.
Four verbs, and they are deliberately unequal. Knowest is plain fact, the two most ordinary movements a body makes, sitting and getting up. Understandest is more than knowing, and afar off means before the thought has arrived where you could name it yourself. Compassest is a winnowing word, the sifting of grain, which is a strange thing to say about a path until you notice he is describing a God who separates and examines rather than one who merely observes. And then the last one drops the intensity entirely: acquainted. It is the language of long familiarity. Not surveillance. Not a file. The word you would use about a person who has known you for forty years.
That is what the list is built to do. It escalates into inspection and lands in friendship, and both are said about the same God on the same page.
May you be spared the exhausting work of managing what has never been hidden. May the version of you that only he has met turn out to be the one he has been acquainted with all along. And may you stop trimming your prayers before you say them.
