Fight the Good Fight
“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”
You expected one decision and got a thousand, most of them made when you were tired, none of them witnessed by anybody. Nobody warned you that faith would involve this much upkeep.
Paul reaches for the arena. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life: both verbs are yours to do, and neither of them describes a drift. But look carefully at what is being contested, because it is a fight of faith. The ground is not your performance. It is whether you keep trusting Him, and those are different battles that feel identical at eleven at night. Then Paul does something that sounds like flattery and is not: thou hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. He is reminding Timothy that the confession came first, and in the very next verse he sets it beside Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession. Timothy's public word is being put in the same category as Christ's before a Roman governor. The fighting is not earning the confession. It is refusing to withdraw it.
There is one thing you are closest to putting down. The prayer, the marriage, the work you believe you were put into, the person you have carried patiently for two years.
You are not asked to decide about it today, and you are not being told what to do. You are simply invited to stay in it one more day, on the strength of a confession you already made, in front of people who heard you make it. That is the whole invitation. It stays open tomorrow too.
