No Condemnation
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
We all know the voice. It arrives late, when the house is quiet, and it sounds so much like justice that arguing with it feels like arrogance.
The voice: You did that.
The answer: Yes. I did.
The voice: You would do it again, given the same evening and the same weakness.
The answer: Probably. That is a fair reading of the evidence.
The voice: Then that is what you are.
The answer: No. That is the step that does not follow, and it is the only step you actually need me to take.
Paul does not tell you to dispute the first three exchanges. He tells you the verdict has already been entered and it is not the one being read to you. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. Now, meaning not pending. And notice the ground of it. Not your record, which is exactly what the voice keeps citing and citing accurately. Your location. In Christ Jesus. Paul then describes those people as walking after the Spirit and not the flesh, so this is nobody's permission slip; it is the difference between a sentence and a direction.
The test is where the voice sends you. Conviction says do something and points at a door. Condemnation says be something and points at a wall. Tonight, when the replay starts, take the step conviction was asking for, the apology or the phone call or the different route home. Then stop. There is no sentence left for you to serve.
