Everlasting Arms

Some fears only come when the house has gone quiet at night. It is not the bill or the scan result. It is the fear of the bottom falling out, the fear that everything will give way at once and there will be nothing underneath to catch you.

Moses spoke today's verse near the very end of his life. Deuteronomy thirty-three is the blessing he gave the tribes of Israel "before his death." What stands out is where he puts this line. He is about to hand them a country, and underneath that country he sets something no country can give. Most comfort is like a ledge you hope to catch on the way down. Moses describes arms that have no end, already in place underneath before anyone starts to fall. And the verse goes on to show that the arms are not only waiting: "he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee."

So take the outcome you have been afraid to look at, and put it into plain words. Then say this about it: the everlasting arms reach lower than that. Whatever happens, you cannot fall past the reach of God.

After that, go and do the ordinary thing you have been too tense to start. The God who holds you from underneath will be there while you do it, and He will still be there when it is done.
