The LORD Shall Fight
“The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”
Someone has wronged you, and you already have the reply written in your head. It is a good one, and you have practised the line that would land.
Now look at the scene in Exodus 14. Pharaoh's army is behind Israel, with "six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt," and the sea is in front of them. A nation that has been out of Egypt only a few days does what frightened people do: they turn on the man who led them out. "Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness?" It is not a calm crowd, and their panic is not unreasonable. Moses answers with the line in today's verse: "The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace."
Now read the next verse, because it keeps this from becoming a lesson about doing nothing. God says to Moses, "Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward." Holding your peace never meant standing still. That night they walked down onto the seabed, with water on both sides and an army behind them. The silence commanded here is about your mouth and your weapons. It has nothing to do with your feet.
So the promise divides the work exactly, and it is worth taking in just that shape. God does the fighting. That includes every part of this you could not change anyway: the outcome, the verdict, and what people finally decide about you. You do the walking, and you walk with your mouth shut. Both halves are in the story, and neither one is optional. The same God who opened the sea for them is the One fighting for you, so you can put down the reply and take the next step forward.
