He Will Answer
“In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.”
A phone lit up on a bedside table, a room too dark to be awake in, a thumb already moving. Scroll, check, search. Anything to feel less alone with it.
The word in the verse is answer. Anah in Hebrew is not merely to reply. It is to respond to a person, to attend to them, and in prayer it carries the sense of answering by acting; it is the word in the challenge on Carmel, the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And notice the tense the psalm chooses. In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me. Both halves are future. He is deciding now what he will do later. This is a man arranging his reflexes in advance of needing them.
Read the rest of the psalm for what he does not claim. He is still poor and needy. The assemblies of violent men are still after him. By the end he is asking for a token for good. The trouble does not lift anywhere inside the psalm. What he has is not a rescued life. It is a God who does not go silent in the middle of one.
Which is where the warning is, and it deserves to be blunt. A reflex is whatever you have practised. If every small trouble for a year has gone first to a screen, that is the direction you will move at the worst hour of your life, and no verse overrules a habit at that speed. The choice is not made in the dark. It is made in the small daylight troubles, one at a time, and by the time the dark arrives it is only being confirmed.
