Entering His Rest

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Hebrews 4:9-10(King James Version)

We say we believe in this rest, and we do not sleep well.

The dishes are done, the house is quiet, and the list is still running: tomorrow's, and the conversation we handled badly, and the thing we should have said. Our bodies stopped hours ago and something in us never received the message. Then on the day we keep, we do a version of the same thing with a Bible open.

So notice what the passage never says. It does not say rest is a feeling of calm; the word is a settling down, the same word used of Israel entering the land, which was an event and not a mood. It does not say the rest is only future, and it does not say it is only present; the writer holds both at once, there remaineth a rest, and yet we which have believed do enter into rest. And it does not say resting means doing nothing. It says he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. God's seventh day was not exhaustion. He stopped because the work was finished, and your rest has that shape: laying down the effort to earn what is already complete.

It also does not say the door stands open indefinitely. Read the warning just before. A whole generation had this offered and did not enter in because of unbelief, and the writer draws the conclusion himself: let us therefore fear. An open door is not the same thing as a door you have walked through.

So name the one thing you are still trying to prove, and write the word finished underneath it. Then, once this week, stop at an hour you chose in advance rather than the hour you collapse at, and let the unfinished list stand there as evidence that you were never the one holding the world together.
