Entering His Rest
“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.”
Many of us say we believe in the rest God promises, and yet we do not sleep well.
The dishes are done and the house is quiet, but the list in our head is still running: tomorrow's jobs, the conversation we handled badly, the thing we should have said. Our bodies stopped hours ago, and something in us never got the message. Then on the day we set apart for rest, we do a version of the same thing with a Bible open.
So notice what this passage never says. It never describes rest as a feeling of calm. The usual Greek word for this rest, which verse ten uses, means a settling down, and Hebrews uses the same idea for Israel entering the promised land, which was something that happened, more than a mood. The passage does not say the rest is only in the future, and it does not say it is only now. Hebrews holds both together: "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God," and also, "we which have believed do enter into rest." Nor does it say that resting means doing nothing. It says, "he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his." God did not rest on the seventh day because He was worn out. He stopped because the work was done, and Hebrews says "the works were finished from the foundation of the world." Your rest has that same shape. It means laying down the effort to earn what is already complete.
Nor does it promise that the door stays open forever. Read the warning that comes before. A whole generation had this rest offered to them, and "they could not enter in because of unbelief." So Hebrews draws the conclusion: "Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it." A door that stands open to you is still a door you have to walk through.
So name the one thing you are still trying to prove. Write the word "finished" under it. Then, once this week, stop working at an hour you chose ahead of time, before you collapse. Let the unfinished list sit there as proof that you were never the one holding the world together. God is, and His work is finished.
