Health Restored
“For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD.”
Your body keeps records whether or not you consult it.
Two people read this verse in opposite directions. One has a wound with a name and a clinic that treats it: the injury that flares before rain, the sleep that never came back after that year. The other has one no examination will find, because it was done by somebody, or by themselves, and there is no department for it. The verse was written for the second and it does not exclude the first.
Look at who God is speaking to, because that is what gives it weight. This is said over a nation he has just described as past helping: thy bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous; there is none to plead thy cause. And he does not blame an enemy for it. A few lines earlier: I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, for the multitude of thine iniquity. Then, in the same passage, for I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD.
That is the truth for both readers, and it is a strange comfort. There is no date attached; he puts no timetable in the sentence. He puts his name on it instead, and he does it as the only one in the room who has never once understated the injury.
