The Blessing
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”
Picture a face turning toward you across a room, and staying turned toward you.
That is the picture inside this blessing, and it is why these words land so differently from the chatter that fills an ordinary day. Most of what is said to you is about errands: send the file, pick up the kids, book the appointment. Maybe nobody has spoken a blessing over your life in a long time. You stopped expecting it so slowly that you never noticed it was gone.
These lines come from God Himself. He gave them to Moses for Aaron and his sons to speak over the people, and then He said why: "they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them" (6:27). When God makes His face shine on you, it is a sign of His favour. When He lifts up His countenance on you, it means He is paying attention: God is looking at you, not past you. The peace at the end is the Hebrew word shalom. It means whole and unbroken, with nothing missing, which is much more than a quiet afternoon. There are three lines, and God's own name is in each one. He gave them to a people who would soon spend forty years in the wilderness, and He kept that people all the way through.
So here are the words again, spoken over you exactly as they stand. Somebody should say them to you, and it has been long enough: "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace."
