The LORD That Healeth

The objection has to come first, because this verse has been used to hurt people. Read carelessly it says the healthy obeyed and the sick did not, and anyone who has buried a faithful person knows that is false.

So walk the list the text actually gives, in its own order, because it is a list of four and not a mechanism.

If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God. Listening comes first, and the Hebrew doubles the verb, hearing you will hear, which means sustained attention rather than a single decision.

And wilt do that which is right in his sight. Not right in yours. The standard is outside you, which is the whole difference between obedience and preference.

And wilt give ear to his commandments. A second listening word, now with content attached: not a general openness to the divine but particular instructions.

And keep all his statutes. Keep is the guarding word, what a watchman does at a gate.

The promise that follows is specific rather than universal. I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians. These diseases. The named ones, from the plagues, on one nation, within living memory of the people standing there. It is not a general policy on illness, and it is spoken at Marah, three days into a desert, immediately after bitter water was made drinkable and immediately before the manna.

The last clause is not a condition at all. For I am the LORD that healeth thee. That is a name, not a transaction.

So bring him the specific thing rather than health in general: the shoulder, the memory that still bleeds, the marriage wearing thin. Name it today. Then make the appointment you have been postponing. Trusting the Healer and phoning the clinic have never once been rivals.
