The Faithful God
“Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.”
A woman in her eighties says grace at a table where she is the only one who does. Her son waits politely. Her grandson is on his phone. She has been the last believer in that room for eleven years.
The objection here is not a cheap one. A verse promising covenant mercy to a thousand generations sounds hollow at that table. The chain in her family broke inside one generation. If the promise is that reliable, why does it look like it stopped with her?
Read what Moses attaches to it. He keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations. The promise is enormous and it has a shape. Loving him and keeping his commandments are not two tracks but one, and the promise runs to the people in it. This is not a guarantee that your descendants automatically inherit your faith; Deuteronomy never pretends that, and the very next verse is about people who turn away. What it guarantees is God's own reliability over a span so long that nobody in the room will live to see the end of it. A thousand generations is not a family tree anyone has ever mapped. It is deliberately longer than any person's memory, and longer than anyone's discouragement.
So go back to the table. She looks like the end of a line. On the arithmetic in this verse she is nearer the start of one, and the faithfulness she is leaning on will still be in force long after everybody at that table, phone included, is dust. The chain is not made out of her family. It is made out of God, and she has hold of it.
