Hold Fast Without Wavering

Maybe you still say the words of your faith, but you have stopped expecting anything to happen when you say them.

Take this verse one phrase at a time. It is an instruction, with its reason added at the end. It begins, "Let us hold fast." That is a firm grip, the kind that holds down something that would otherwise get away. Next comes "the profession of our faith." In the Greek it is the confession of our hope, and the word for confession is homologia, which means saying the same thing: what you have already said out loud in front of witnesses. Then "without wavering" is a single Greek word that means not bending or leaning.

The reason at the end is where the real weight rests: "for he is faithful that promised." Hebrews does not tell you to grip harder, and it never says that your grip is what makes the promise good. Almost in passing, it moves the load off you and onto the One who promised.

The very next sentence is the practical half that usually gets left off: "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works," and then, "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together." When faith is wearing thin, the help Hebrews offers is other believers, people close enough to stir you up.

So say what you believe out loud to somebody today. One honest sentence is enough. Say it to the friend who has watched you drift, or to whoever in your house would notice. Beliefs kept private tend to thin out, while beliefs spoken aloud have witnesses. And behind your words stands the God who keeps His, because "he is faithful that promised."
