The Secret of the Lord
“The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.”
We want to know what God is doing. If we are honest, most of us want the information more than we want him, and we would take a reliable forecast over an actual relationship if the trade were offered.
So take the word the verse turns on. Sod, translated secret, does not mean a hidden fact. It means a council, a circle of people sitting close enough to talk quietly, and by extension what gets said in that circle. It is used of a gathering of friends and of God's own council. Amos uses it exactly so: Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. The picture is not a locked cabinet with a combination. It is a room with chairs in it.
And the entry is named: with them that fear him. Not the clever, not the well read, not the ones with the sharpest questions. The second half tells you what actually circulates in that room, and it has nothing to do with tomorrow's news. He will shew them his covenant. Not the schedule. The terms. What he is like, and what he has bound himself to do.
Which is the truth to carry, and it is worth sitting with rather than acting on. The people who end up knowing the mind of God are not the ones who investigated hardest. They are the ones who took him seriously enough to be trusted in the room, and what they were let in on turned out to be himself.
