Preserved Forever

Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

Psalm 12:7(King James Version)

"Our lips are our own: who is lord over us?"

That is a line from inside the psalm, the boast of the men the writer is complaining about. Psalm 12 is not a comfort poem that happens to mention trouble. It opens with Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth, and it is a report from a society where flattery has become the ordinary way of speaking and everybody's word has quietly stopped meaning anything.

God answers, and notice what he does not promise. He nowhere says the corruption will stop. The last verse leaves the wicked walking on every side. What he says is that he will arise, and that his own words, set beside the ones surrounding you, are as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Two kinds of speech in the psalm, and only one of them has been through fire.

Verse seven is where the keeping happens, and the preposition matters. Preserved from this generation, not out of it. You are kept inside the mess.

So do the small thing that puts weight back into speech. Somewhere this week a fact will be easier to bend: a number at work, a reason you were late, an opinion you do not actually hold. Refuse it once and accept the smaller result it costs you. Being kept looks like that in ordinary hours, and it rarely looks like anything else.
